What is YOGA?
“Yoga is a science perfected by the ancient seers of India, not of India merely, but of humanity as a whole. It is an exact science. It is a perfect, practical system of self-culture.”

Swami Sivananda
Yoga literally means to join, to unite. It is union, the integration of body, mind, and consciousness.

Yoga is a science of inner growth. Its purpose is precise: to still mental fluctuations, the constant modifications of the mind that create suffering, confusion, and restlessness. When these fluctuations quiet, peace is not something we chase. It reveals itself as our natural state.

Through disciplined practice, yoga develops the capacity to rise beyond the pull of the senses into steady one pointedness, undivided attention, and inner equilibrium. It is not escape. It is refinement. A training of perception and a cultivation of awareness.

Across centuries, different schools of yoga have offered methods for total development of the human system, physical, psychological, and energetic. Practices work on balancing solar and lunar principles, regulating the autonomic nervous system, strengthening the body, and clarifying the mind. Each path approaches the same summit from a different angle.

Broadly, yoga unfolds through three major streams.

Karma Yoga is the yoga of selfless action. Acting without attachment to outcome and purifying the heart through service.

Gyana, or Jnana Yoga is the yoga of knowledge and discernment. Dissolving illusion through inquiry and reaching truth through the cessation of mental modifications.

Bhakti Yoga is the yoga of devotion. Love directed toward the highest and surrender of the ego into unity.

At its core, yoga is an ancient guide to healthy living developed by Indian sages. It offers a holistic framework where physical practice, psychological insight, breath, ethics, and philosophy are interwoven. It does not separate body from mind or spirit. It integrates them.

Yoga is not merely exercise. It is a practical methodology for balance, inside and out.
